Another short post. This weekend I finally upgraded to Firefox 3.5, which now plays ogg (using the html5 video tag) out of the box. This is a very exciting, as this capability is now part of the stable release. It plays the short ogg demo video very nicely. This has been in the making since early 2008 (see HTML 5 video tag and Ogg), and it's nice that it's now reached the mainstream.

In my view, it does mean that our encoding practices, and our web sites (such as CamTV) are now out of date: We should be encoding into ogg, and we should offer plugin-free playback via html5. If FF/Opera is detected, we should offer ogg, if Safari is detected, we should offer H.264. (Unfortunately Safari hasn't implemented ogg playback.)
