There may be a number of links that go to missing pages, and other inconsistencies. Much of it is also very informal, and should be seen as workshop notes! From: User:Mathe/BlogEntry: 2007 December 06 14:45:29 UTC

Case study: World Wide Webcast and ATLAS Virtual Visit at CERN by Silvano deGennaro. For more on CERN go to: http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html

Silvano says they are more famous for their contribution to the web. But the core of their work is to comunicate physics with great excitement and enthusiasm. Some of the products that they produce include:

  • video clips
  • Live Tv and webcast shows - (just as there is hollywood there is cernlywood) all can be downaloaded at www.cern.ch/project-tv
  • Games and online sites
  • Innovative rich media interfaces such as virtual tours

Technologies used by CERN include:

  • Production: DVCam, HDCam, HDV
  • Platform: Mac OSX, Final Cut Studion Pro
  • Distribution: RM, flash video, podcast, QT

1 Live Webcasting[edit]

webcast is not television it is much richer. Below are some of the key differences:

  • Productions should be 'web style'
  • Webcast use power of interaction; users can for example send through messages using IM
  • There are latency and compression issues; thus there is a need to get around these by buffering delays
  • In preparing for webcasting, a plan B is needed to provide failsafe alternatives
  • To announce a webcast which is generally once off, there is a need to use alternative and creative ways for announcing to the public. In TV, the announcement is ussually made through a magazine. (As a side note part of the creativity in making the announcement includes using a famous Italian female - I guess the clinche sex sells also applies in disseminating scientific content!)

A success story for CERN in webcasting was 'Beyond Einstein'. This event qualified them an entry the the guinness books of records for having a large number of simultenous connections.

An opinion on the demos: CERN webcast content and quality looks as impressive as tv production.
The year of physics webcast can give the grammy awards orginisers a run for their money!! For more
on this webcast check: http://wyp.digitalidentity.it/ or google 'Beyond Einstein world wide
 webcast'

2 Atlas Virtual Visit[edit]

The Atlas virtual visit as it is aptly named provides an amazing virtual tour of a particle accelarator google or wait for Silvano to provide the exact url. The Atlas Virtual visit in a nutshell:

  • Uses flash streaming
  • Is web-based

The future according to CERN Use rich meadia portals to distribute content. As is channels like youTube in four months had over 1 million hits, this means it makes more sense to target such channels as opposed to tv.
